The name Mighty Joe Young was shared between the famous gorilla movie created by the Godzilla team and the famed Chicago bluesman. The demo tape's got some harder rock that winds up on the debut and some discarded funkier items. Proto-STP! Mighty Joe Young had Robert DeLeo, Dean DeLeo, Eric Kretz and Scott Weiland going for funk rock a lot of the time. I was new to New York and it was an exciting, crazy time. I didn’t know about a previous album thread until the OP George P was kind enough to let me know about it but it was from 10 years ago. For Velvet Revolver, we can do it either after the first run of STP or afterwards – whichever is fine.
I’d like to cover everything but still give STP priority so I posted an order we can try doing mostly the STP albums with a couple of exceptions and then the other acts. Going from Soi-Disant to Swing, then to Mighty Joe Young to Stone Temple Pilots, splitting up, reuniting, changing singers: there’s a lot of additional material. I got into the band around 1993 like many fans buying Core, and stuck with them through this year for their latest Perdida. I haven’t seen too many album threads covering bands from the last few decades so I’m not sure how this will fly, but with conditions the way they are, I have some time on my hands and need a distraction, so it would be great to talk some STP. Stone Temple Pilots are one of my favorite rock bands and they get some coverage here, but I thought it might be fun trying a more in-depth thread for them.
